RJF // Deanna K. Klingel, Rod & Staff, Dear America, Pansy & More!!

Hey y'all!! I'm back to bombard you with another round of book recommendations. :D Aren't you thrilled?

~ Non-Fiction

Faith Under Fire by Steve Rabey

The Second World War generation met many challenges, and turned to their faith to sustain them through overwhelming odds. Here are stories of faith told by the people who lived them. this compelling collection not only honors the lives of these people of faith, but inspires readers to seek God in their own lives.

Passion and Purity by Elisabeth Elliot

Very few books on dating have stood the test of time like Passion and Purity. Its much-needed message remains strong and hopeful in an age when doing whatever "feels right" is common practice. Using her own life as an example, Elisabeth Elliot guides singles of both genders and of any age on how to put their love lives under the authority of Jesus Christ.

And...the new cover. Just because I like it. ;)

Ensamples of our Admonition by Mary Miller

These stories will challenge youth to choose right, whether in response to admonition or in response to the various circumstances of life. You will enjoy the many "ensamples ... for our admonition" and the blessings that right choices bring. You will also be warned by the results of wrong attitudes and wrong choices of some of the characters. Our choices determine eternal destinies.

~ Deanna K. Klingel

The two books would probably be considered 'boy' books, but I absolutely love them. And my brother has never read them!! :P

Avery's Battlefield

Avery and his dog, Gunner, have a good life in Kanawha Valley a loving family, a prosperous farm, and a warm community of friends. But when the long unrest between the North and the South ignites into war, Avery's peaceful world is shattered. His father, brother, and uncle leave home, each drawn away by the war. Soon Avery and Gunner must begin a dangerous journey that will take them across the paths of people on both sides of the struggle.

Avery's Crossroads

Avery's skills as a doctor and his dog Gunner's friendly personality make the pair a welcome sight to the soldiers in the Civil War hospitals. But mending wounds is not the only challenge Avery faces. Dwindling supplies, insufficient medical facilities, and local troublemakers add to the stress of the war. Avery realizes that the real wounds of the war the wounds of the soul will take years to heal. But he finds hope for the future in his deepening friendship with Claire, a girl from back home who shares his passion for helping the wounded. Together they pray for the long war to end.

~ Rod & Staff

The Drunkard's Children by Mrs. M.J.P.S.

"Oh! oh!" sobbed the child with a smothered moan, which was far more pitiful than a loud cry. "Oh, my mother, my mother, will she ever kiss her little girl again?"
"Hush, hush, dear little sister, do not cry so; it almost breaks my heart to hear you," said Marcia, choking down her own sobs with a great effort.

Very hard indeed are the days following the death of Marcia and Ellen's mother. Daily they pray and ask the Lord to take care of them and to save their poor drinking father, whom they love dearly. The responsibility of finding food for them rests on Marcie, the older of the two girls.

Marcia entered the store, approached the counter and said in a trembling voice, "Please, Mr Greene, let me have a little flour or meal to make a cake for breakfast."
"I suppose you have the money to pay for it." said the man, looking sharply at her.
"But I have no money." said Marcia, while tears slowly gathered in her large, gray eyes.
"Well, ask your father for some. Tell him I saw him taking a walk last night by moonlight, and I would advise him, for decency's sake, to stop drinking and take care of his children."
Poor little Marcia's heart gave a great bound at these cruel words, and she turned away in an agony of tears.
We know the Lord's eye is upon the righteous, and His ear is open unto their cry. A blessing awaits your family as you share these experiences and others with "The Drunkard's Children." A true story that will be enjoyed by all ages.

At the Little White Cabin by Marian Schoolland
Bonnie Baxter and her best friend, Bessie Small, are excited when a moving van backs up to the little old brown house on the corner. Who is moving into such an old rundown place? The summer turns out to be an exciting one, and the children learn lessons on helpfulness, kindness, and forgetting themselves for the good of others.

~ Dear America

The Fences Between Us by Kirby Larson

With this sweeping tale of life on the World War II homefront, Newbery Honor author Kirby Larson brings her incredible talent to the Dear America series. When Pearl Harbor is attacked, America is finally unable to ignore the wars raging in Europe and Asia any longer. And one girl's entire life is about to change when everything she knows is turned on its head. After the devastating attack on Pearl Harbor, where her brother, a navy sailor, is stationed, Piper Davis begins chronicling her compelling journey through one of history's most tragic and unforgettable eras.

My Secret War by Mary Pope Osborne

In a diary that brings to life the dramatic happenings on the home front during World War II, Madeline Beck is living in a boardinghouse with her mother while her father is on an aircraft carrier guarding the Pacific Coast. After discovering that a German U-boat has landed near her home--a little-known, true incident on Long Island--she and her classmates form "Kids Fight for Freedom" and participate in the home front war effort.

~ Isabella Alden/Pansy/whatever-other-name-she-wrote-by

Ester Reid

“If something would "only" happen—if I could have one day, just one day, different from the others!”Thus mourned Ester Ried, for it seemed to her that her days consisted of nothing but monotony. Every day she made beds, baked endless pies in a hot kitchen, ironed, and raced against the clock to get tea on the table for the boarders. Every evening she fell into bed, too weary even for prayers, much less any Bible reading. As she nursed her suffering soul, she snapped at her sisters and brother until her very crossness added still more to her suffering and made her crosser still! Then a letter arrived from a well-to-do cousin in New York City—and thing "did" begin to happen. Ester was invited for a visit, and when she accepted, she had no idea that the coming days would change her life in ways she had never imagined.

I hope you enjoyed this look into some more books I love. :) Have you read any of these? Do you want to now? ;)

Beautiful People ~ June

Hey all! :D

This is my first time linking-up with the fun Beautiful People gigamo (totally a word. I'm blowing autocorrect's mind.) after seeing it on several blogs for...quite some time. It's a whole lot of fun and I hope to participate more in the future. :-)

This month's question selection is all childhood themed and I chose a character from War Tears, David Caranathan, for this round. ;) David is a fun character who puts up with a lot (from me) and endures a lot (from me and fellow characters).  And is nearly killed countless times by yours truly but that's okay he can take it.

What is their first childhood memory?
When he and his parents moved to the farm where he grew up (David was 4 or 5 at the time). They had lived in town up until that point.

What were their best and worst childhood experiences?
Best... Learning to fly with his uncle and/or getting to fly with a stunt-pilot that came through the area when David was eight or nine.

Worst... (See next question.)

What’s something that scared them as child?
Losing a sibling. I know, that's a little more extreme than you were expecting, but it's for real. When David was seven, his sister Erin (younger by two years) nearly drowned in a pond near their home. Just a few years later, their younger brother Michael (younger than David by nine years) almost died of an illness. Losing anyone he cares about is David's biggest fear.

Who did they look up to most?
David looked/looks up to his Dad mostly. :)

Favorite and least favorite childhood foods?
Favorite... His mother, Lydia's, raspberry tarts. A treat!
Least favorite... David grew up on a farm during the Great Depression. They didn't complain about eating anything. But he didn't care for most root vegetables -- beets, radishes, turnips, carrots. ;)

If they had their childhood again, would they change anything?
Hm...I don't think so. David had a good childhood for the most part. They faces hardships, but they overcame them. :)

What was their childhood home like?
A antique, two-story, whitewashed farm house. Think, The Waltons. ;) The old, red barn sits off to the side, and the smokehouse, woodshed, garden, and well house are scattered around as well. :)

What kind of child were they? Curious? Wild? Quiet? Devious?
Quiet, but curious. Not wild or devious, but quite the tease. As a child, David is a bookworm that's content off to the side, but also can handle being the center of attention if need be.

What was their relationship to their parents and siblings like?
Great. :) David and Erin fought a lot -- usually because David was trying to keep her out of trouble -- but they could sort their differences out quickly (with or without parental involvement/interference).

What did they want to be when they grew up, and what did they actually become?
At the age of 8 he wanted to be a stunt-pilot that traveled with the circus... But in reality, he became an auto-mechanic who, upon the U.S.'s entry into WWII, joined the Army Air Corps.

*~*~*~

Hope you enjoyed!! :D

We have VBS at church this week, so I don't know how much I'll be around the blogosphere. I do have a couple of posts planned though, if I can just find time to get them up. :P

This picture has absolutely nothing to do with this post, but today is the first day of summer and...Popsicles!! I love Popsicles, so we're keepin' the picture. ;) *nods*

Happy summer, everyone! It has finally arrived! :D How are you all? I'm quite well, thank you. Not to busy, not too free. I'm finally getting some research done. You know how I said I was going to research like crazy this month? Yeah, well, that sort of...fell by the wayside. Not to say I don't want to, it just hasn't happened much until Monday and yesterday. ;)

Okay, moving on. James from Idaho Spud tagged me for the It's Show Time tag!! :D

The Rules:
Answer the questions
Tag 3 to 5 people

1.Who's your favorite actors?
Hmm...I've never really thought about having favorite actors/actresses, but I guess there are several that I like in more than one movie/show. ;)

Jimmy Stewart -- Shenandoah & It's a Wonderful Life

Richard Thomas -- The Waltons, The Christmas Box, & The Christmas Secret

Top Ten Villains // Tag

Hey folksies!! (I'm not sure if that's how you spell 'folksies'... It's probably not a real word, but I'm spelling it how I'm saying it so THERE.)

Okay, here goes. I was tagged by Rebekah at Rebekah's Remarks for the Top Ten Villains tag. (She tagged me like an eternity ago, but whatever.) Thanks Rebekah! :)

The Rules...
1. Post the button.
2. Thank the blogger who tagged you.
3. List your top ten favorite villains and why you chose them(they can be from movies or books).
4. Tag ten other bloggers.

My Villains... (In no particular order.)

You would not believe how long it took me to think up ten evil-y peoples. I was going to use Adolf Hitler, but Mom says he 'doesn't count' because he's not fictitious... =/ She did have lots of good ones though, so thanks Mom. :)
We'll start off with the obvious villain...

Satan ~ Everyone with me on this one? ;) But, thanks to Christ, we can rejoice in the knowledge that he has already been conquered! Hallelujah!!

“These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.”              John 16:33 KJV

Colonel von Laeman from Return to the Hiding Place ~ Ugh. Just the sight of this guy makes me cringe. If you haven't seen RttHP (yes, it has an abbreviation now. You're welcome.), you so should. It's heart-wrenching, and beautiful, and amazing, and...gahhhh. Words can't describe. ;)

King Respen from The Blades of Acktar series by Tricia Mingerink ~ Okay, I still have a serious Acktarian hangover right now. Even though I finished Deny and Defy over two weeks ago. But...goodness these are good books. They just make my heart hurt... (That's a good thing.) and...yeah. (Also, book four is going to be titled Deliver. *shrieks*) I'm extremely off topic. *cough* King Respen is a horrid villain. But how can the hero of the story be good if the bad guy isn't bad? (Okay, don't answer that...)

Charles Kent from Beyond the Mask ~ Can we all agree that this guy is just awful?? I mean, really??? Keeping Will and Charlotte apart, trying to have Will killed (several times), even lying to his own niece and planning to kill her!!! Yeah. I need to watch this movie again. XD

Also, am I the only one that is reminded of Leith Torren by Will Reynolds? You know, with the whole assassin thing... Yes? ... Maybe? ... Sort of?

Mr. Potter from It's a Wonderful Life ~ First off, this is like one of my favorite movies. Everyone needs to see this amazing Christmas movie at least three times, in my own humble opinion. ;) And how Potter tries to destroy George or even buy him off is just so, so...villainous.

Snake Cain, Matty Cain, & Sheriff Joe Cain from Gallows Road ~ *shudders* This group is. just. horrid. Like, I can't even... All the positively evil things Snake and Matty do to Bob and his family are just...awful. And of course their 'sheriff' uncle is just as bad for turning his head from all of it. >_<

Brady Gray's brothers (except Logan) from Seasons of Gray ~ Okay, so I'm going to assume that all of you have heard the story of Joseph (if you haven't, go read Genesis 37:1-36). So take that to modern day times. Yeah. These guys are so horrible. (Especially Jake. Jake is horrible. But God can change Jake. :))

Ellis Brawley from Believe in Me ~ Again, this guy just looks awful and mean and rude and nasty. (All of which he is, of course. That's how he made this list. ;P) I mean, trying to take the state championship from those hard-working girls?! Ugh...

Samuel Doros from Love's Abiding Joy ~ Ewww... *makes face* Just this dudes name is mean-lookin'. And he's so nasty (especially to Jeff) and so controlling (especially to Willie, who has more than enough to deal with right know without having to evict friends). Very villainous and only seeks personal gain. -_-

Clay & Mac from The Redemption of Henry Myers ~ Really, guys? Why can't you just leave this poor guy alone?!? He's trying to do right and live right and move on from his nasty past and you two just won't let him. Utterly despicable. >_<

I could keep throwing out villain-y people, but I'll stop now. ;) Some others I considered are... Ella from Indiana Jones & the Last Crusade, Major Ubel from Dark Storms Rising by Jesseca Wheaton (this dude is just HORRID. I'm pretty sure that even his author is afraid of him...), and the 'mystery villains' from The Letter and the Sisters of Holmes County trilogy by Wanda Brunstetter.

Okay.

I'm pretty sure everyone 'round here has been tagged, so I shall refrain from seriously tagging anyone. But...if you haven't been tagged, you're reading this, and you have read/saw at least on of the above books/movies -- consider yourself tagged! XD (Also, tell me so I can go read your post! :))

Thanks for reading, peoples. I have several more tags to catch up on, so those will be coming sooooon. =D

One Year Blogiversary // 2/2

Hello everyone! It's time for the second half of the Q&A session!! :D Again, thank you all soooo much. Without such awesome followers, I doubt if I would still be blogging. :)

Here's goes!!!! XD

~ Ashley

What is your favorite beverage?
DR. PEPPER!!!!!!! Seriously, I love that stuff. Probably not the best thing I could be consuming, but...yeah. And I don't drink *that* much. :P

I love this!! :D  -- Pinterest

--Pinterest

He. Hehe. Heh. That's hilarious. Mr. Pibb is just NOT the same. XD

Does caffeine affect you?
Hehe, funny question. ;) Sometimes it makes me really goofy and giggly, but that's all. In other words, I can drink a cup of coffee and go to bed no problem. :)

What is your favorite thing about blogging?
Interacting with all you amazing bloggers!!! :D Y'all are seriously THE BEST. <3

~ Jesseca You-know-my-last-name

Hmmm. I wonder who this could be... B-)

What have you learned in your year of blogging?
I've learned that sticking to the plan does NOT work for me. Which is why I don't post on certain days, it just doesn't happen that way for me. I've also learned a ton of abbreviations I didn't know before (ex. OTP, BTW, IKR.) I also wouldn't understand words like 'shipping'... ;)

What do you enjoy most about blogging?
*refers to Ashley's question* Getting to know other bloggers, meeting amazing, talented people. It's seriously the best part of it. :-)

Will you be sharing more of your writing with us soon? B-)
I might...and I might not. We'll just have to see, won't we?

...

Yes, I will be sharing more of my writings soon. Probably this super-crazy-dramatic-the-sky-is-falling short-story I started while we were camping. ;) Are you curious yet? No? Well, here's a teaser picture to help your lacking curiosity...

--Google

Any goals for what you want to accomplish during your next year of blogging?
Oooo, yes!!! I want to share more short stories here on the blog, be more consistent in my blogging schedule, and keep my posts/pages/blog more orderly. :)

What do you most enjoy seeing on other blogs?
Stories! And randomness!! And writing challenges!! And excerpts from everyone's everyday lives are always my favorites. :)

Do you think you are crazy?
*snickers* Oh, yes, absolutely. Aren't all writers? ;)

--Pinterest

Do you like random weird questions?
Yes, I do. (And the above one is one of my favorites. XD)

What is your favorite thing about other people asking you questions?
Hmm, that's a tough one. The funny part is I usually run from answering questions about myself in person-to-person conversation. Mainly because I stumble over myself a billion times before I finally get out what I want to say (if I ever do). I don't know why, but this is just so different and I enjoy it. :)
*realizes she still hasn't answered the question* Um, okay... One of my favorite thing about this would have to be that I can share things about myself that would be awkward to just say in a conversation. Also, I like how y'all can ask whatever you want, so I can find out what y'all want to know more about. ^_^

~ Bethany R.

What inspired you to start a blog?
Reading other blogs. I know that's a super boring answer, but that's the honest truth of it. :) Reading others' blogs and justing getting a feel of the blogging world made me want to become a blogger myself. :)

What were your original goals?
Share my stories – weekly or more – and to get feedback was my original plan for this blog. Obviously that didn't last long. :P

When did you first begin writing? What was your project?
I first started writing towards the end of 8th grade (spring of 2014). The project was a mystery set in an Amish community, focusing on two girls who find an old letter hidden in the attic. (It was ingeniously titled "The Letter in the Attic". Pfft.) I didn't write in it for long though. Then that fall I started writing fanfictions when I discovered the Circle C writing contest. Everything has just escalated from there. :-)

How did you become a fan of World War II?
I saw a movie. And I'm not even kidding. I saw this adorable-ly sweet, heart-rendingly amazing, make-you-cry good movie and I've been hooked ever since. That's when I started writing my WWII novel (March of 2015) and my infatuation of that era has only increased. :)

--Pinterest

Favorite books on the era? Fiction or nonfiction?
*grins at a good excuse to shove some awesome books y'all's way* Hmmm, I think I can come up with some. *strolls to the bookshelves*

A Distant Melody, Where Treetops Glisten, Interrupted, A Christmas Gift for Rose and The Fences Between Us (fiction) and G.I. Joe & Lillie, and Faith Under Fire (nonfiction) are all favorites of mine. Also, I just started reading in The Air War over Europe and I'm really enjoying it. :)
(Also, if you ever have some WWII recommendations, I WILL TAKE THEM.)

Do you enjoy reading fiction or nonfiction most? One of your top favorites of each category?
I enjoy fiction the most for anything I'm reading. I can usually get more from it, though there are some great nonfiction books as well. :) Only one top favorite?? Fiiiinnneee. ;) I'll choose two that I didn't use with the above questions... XD

Fiction: A Cousin's Promise by Wanda Brunstetter. This book has been among my favorites for a loooonnnggg time and probably always will be. :)
Nonfiction: The Battle Plan for Prayer by Stephen and Alex Kendrick (link leads to my review). This is an incredible book about strengthening your prayer life. :D

~ Rebekah Ashleigh

Do you prefer to have long hair or short hair?
Long hair, but not too long. I got my hair cut recently and now it's a few inches below my shoulders. I really like this length. ;-)

Do you like to paint your nails?
Yes, ma'am! I usually just paint my toenails because whenever I do my fingernails it chips out and looks awful (also, if I bite...then I'm eating that stuff. O_o). But I do enjoy it. :) Right now they're a reddish/pinkish coral and grey-blue. :)

What's your favorite animal?
Dogs. :) Always and forever, it's dogs. (Preferably Labrador retrievers. :D) My family has always had dogs, and...yeah. Girls best friend. <3

So far, what has been the best movie you've seen this year?
SUCH A HARD QUESTION! Um, okay. *clears throat* I honesty don't think I can pick one. Choosing between God's Not Dead 2, Return to the Hiding Place, 23 Blast, and The Redemption of Henry Myers is just. too. impossible. (In other words, all of those are best movies. :))

What's your favorite winter activity?
Probably snow tubing. :) Or sledding. I love just about any activity that involves snow. :D

~ Abi

What's your middle name?
For Internet safety and all that, I can't answer this one. But I will tell you it starts with an L and y'all can guess. ;)

What state do you live in?
North Carolina :)

Have you ever traveled out of the country? If so, where?
No, I have not. Though I would love to! :D I plan to travel the world one day... *dreamy sigh* What, don't you believe me?

What is the #1 book series you would recommend?
Uhhhhhhh. Wow. Another hard question... I would have to say the A Life of Faith: Kathleen Mckenzie books by Tracy Leinginger Craven. They're such great books with the strongest faith themes I've read. :)

If you were going to be executed, what method would you choose?
Oh dear. That's a scary thought. Um, I don't know; I've never given it much thought. Whatever is quickest and painless-est. What about freezing to death? I've heard that you just sort of go to sleep... I don't like being cold, but I'd rather be cold than hot. (So I don't want to die in a burning building.) So. Yeah. I really don't know. ;)

What inspired you to begin blogging?
*refers to Bethany's question* Reading other blogs. Seriously. :)

Are you going to publish your writings one day?!? Is this still a distant dream?
I would LOVE to publish my writings one day!! :) Don't know when it will happen though so, yes, it's still a dream. :P

What are you currently working on?
Lots of things? Okay, not quite. ;) Most faithfully, I'm working on my WWII novel, War Tears. (Summary is under the 'writings' page.) It's a special story to me and...Ahhh, I just love it! *hugs the characters* I'm so pleased with how it's coming along too. :)

Awesome idea Faith :D I was wondering what your favorite Bible verse is and What your favorite Bible character/story is and why?
My favorite Bible verse has been 1 Peter 5:7 for a loooong time. I also really love Isaiah 40:31 and John 16:33. :)

My favorite Bible story is Ruth...or the Resurrection...or the prodigal son...or... ;) Ehehe. Get the picture? Aside from those already mentioned (and Jesus ^_^), my favorite Bible character is David. :)
