Love Needs No Words ~ part two

Hey guys! Here's part two! :)

********

The next few weeks of summer passed much in the same way as the previous weeks, only now Daniel and Shay spent most of their free time together as well. When they weren't teaching or playing with the children at the summer camp, they could be found roaming around town or strolling through the park. Leigh teased Shay, saying Daniel and stolen her best friend.

One Friday afternoon in late July, Shay was hanging around the house after having her wisdom teeth removed that morning.

Her thoughts kept returning to Daniel and the fact that she hadn't seen him in several days. She again reminded herself that he had a job. As much as she would like to be, she wasn't top priority.

She was in her room reading her Bible when she heard a car pull up outside. Assuming it was her older brother, Jeff, she didn't bother to get up and check.

A few minutes later, Mom knocked once on Shay’s door and stuck her head inside. “Are you asleep, Shay?”

Shay shook her head. “No, I'm doing my devotions.”

“You have a visitor. But if you're not feeling up to it, I can tell them to come back another time.”

“I'm fine, Mom,” Shay insisted, setting her Bible and journal aside and swinging her feet off the side of the bed. “I had wisdom teeth pulled, not brain surgery.”

Mrs. Williams frowned. “That's not funny, dear.”

Shay smiled. “Sorry, I didn't mean anything by it. Who's my visitor?”

The smile that Mom returned appeared to be forced. “It's Daniel Rogers.”

Shay grinned and bounded across the room. “Thanks, Mom!” She gave her a quick hug and hurried down the hall.

“Shay, slow down,” Mom reprimanded. “You don't want to appear so anxious.”

Shay stopped at the top of the stairs and turned to face her. “But I am anxious. Why should I hide it?”

Instead of answering, her mother sighed and responded with a question of her own. “Are you sure this relationship you two are forming is such a good idea, dear?”

Shay frowned. “Why wouldn't it be? Daniel is a great Christian guy, definitely a gentleman, and I believe he cares for me very much.”

“I'm just looking out for your best interests, honey. A man with a disability such as Daniel’s could place an awful burden on you.”

Shay leaned against the handrail, trying to process her mother’s words. Surely she'd heard her wrong. “How can you say such a thing, Mom? Daniel is not disabled.” Without waiting for a response, Shay went on. “What about Uncle Tom and Aunt Dasha? He's deaf and they have a great marriage.”

“We’ll tall about this later.” Mom replied, signaling a drop of the subject. “Invite Daniel to have desert with us.”

***********

Daniel looked up when Shay entered the living room. Although Mr. Williams knew some basic sign language, the near one-sided conversation was awkward.

 “Hey!”

He grinned and stood to greet her. “How's the mouth?”

“Better,” she smiled up at him so sweetly. “Talking is sort of strange with the gauze, but I'm getting used to it.”

 “That's good,” he nodded.

“Mom invited you for apple pie and ice cream.”

“Sounds great.” He forced a happy expression – after all he had put himself in this situation – but any amount of time spent around Shay's family made him feel uncomfortable. Sure, they couldn't communicate, but Shay was a great translator. That wasn't such a problem. He had often got the feeling that her parents and brother weren't too pleased with her choice of a beau. And that made what he'd came to say all the more difficult.

Shay must've sensed his discomfort over not being able to talk with her family, because she grabbed two bowls of pie and ice cream from the kitchen and led him out to the front porch.

They sat in the porch swing and Shay handed him a bowl. “It's delicious.”

 “Did you make it?”

She feigned an angry expression. “You know better than that.”

He just grinned and they resumed eating their pie and ice cream, chatting over everyday things.

After they'd set their dishes aside on a small deck table, Daniel decided it was time to bring up the real reason he'd came calling this evening.

“There's something I need to tell you.”

Concern filled her eyes. “What is it? Is something wrong?”

“No, nothing like that. I just… These last two months…” He reached over and took her hand in his. “I've fallen in love with you, Shay.”

She didn't speak for several minutes following his announcment and a sweet smile lit her face. “I…I love you too, Daniel.”

He didn't know whether to laugh or sigh in relief. Instead, he tried to imagine what the silly grin he was wearing must look like. “That's good to know.”

Shay just nodded, her green-eyed gaze focused on him.

Daniel swallowed hard and debated over whether or not he should do as he so badly wanted to. He squeezed Shay’s hand and carefully searched her eyes.

Slowly, almost expecting her to protest, Daniel leaned forward and placed a tender kiss in her hair. As he pulled away, he was startled to find tears shimmering in the corners of her eyes. “Was that wrong of me?” He quickly signed.

Shay shook her head. “No, Daniel, that was not wrong. It was…” She seemed to be having trouble finding the right words – so unlike her. “It was perfect. You make me feel so special and loved.”

He smiled at the vulnerable look in her eyes. “You are both. Special and loved.”

 Shay just smiled.

“I need to get home.” He reluctantly stood to go and she stood with him. “I just had to come over here and see how you're doing.”

“Okay.” She squeezed his hand and walked with him down the length of the porch.

“I don’t know if I'll see you tomorrow, but if not I'll see you Sunday.”

“I'll save you a seat in class,” she grinned.

“Deal.” He threw her a wink and hurried towards his car.

“Bye, Daniel!” He returned her wave as he pulled out of her driveway, his heart joyful and full of hope.

***********

Shay watched from the porch until Daniel's car disappeared from view. She turned and started back inside, feeling as if she may burst with happiness.

As she entered the living room where her family was relaxing, Jeff looked up from where he sat, his laptop on the desk in front of him. “Just how serious is this guy?”

Shay was bothered by the tone of his voice. “What are you talking about?”

He rolled his eyes. “Come on, sis. Don't play innocent. I saw the way he looks at you.”

“What would you say if I told you he's very serious?” Shay asked, taking a seat on the couch and glancing across the room to her parents. They sat on the other couch, opposite from her, silently watching the exchange between their children.

“I would say you should break things off with him right away.”

“What?” Shay exclaimed. “What do you have against him?”

“I'd like to know the answer to that too, son,” Dad broke in.

Jeff shrugged. “I'm just looking out for you, Shay. I don't think it's a good idea for you to get emotional involved with this guy. You don't want to lead him on and break his heart. Anyone can see that the guy isn't right, if you know what I mean?” Jeff tapped a finger to his temple.

“That’s not true!” Shay jumped to her feet. She knew she was nearly shouting, but she didn't care. How could he say such a thing about Daniel? “You don't even know what you're talking about, Jeff! A tragic accident robbed him of his ability to verbally communicate.”

Jeff returned his attention to the computer screen, not responding to his sister’s outburst.

“Shay dear,” Mom started. “Have you ever given thought to the fact that life with a man who can't speak would be difficult?”

“So you don't like him either?” Shay knew she shouldn't speak to her mother with such disrespect, but her family’s words angered her.

Dad cleared his throat. “Honey, it's not that we don't like Daniel. He's a great guy. But your mother and brother are trying to look out for you.”

“Look out for me? How is that looking out for me?” When neither her parents or Jeff spoke, Shay continued. “Do you know what he told me as he was leaving?”

Still, no one answered. Shay was just waiting for Jeff to spout off something hurtful like, ‘he didn't tell you anything’.

Finally, Dad spoke. “What did he tell you, honey?”

Before answering, Shay slowly looked around the room, studying each of her family members. With the sudden feeling that they would not joyfully accept her good news, tears filled her eyes. “Never mind. You don't really care to know.” She whirled and raced from the room.

“Wait a minute, honey,” Mom called after her. “Shay!”

She wouldn't listen. She took the stairs two at a time, and fled down the hall and into her room, shutting the door behind her.

Shay felt like a silly, young girl as she flopped across the bed, tears steaming from her eyes. The happiness she had felt after her visit from Daniel this evening was quickly deflating, and she didn't like it one bit. She considered texting her friend. Leigh would understand and be happy for her and Daniel.

A cheerful ringtone interrupted her pity-party. Probably Jeff from the living room. She groaned and reached for her phone, lying in the windowsill.

It was Daniel. She grinned and propped on her elbow to read the rather lengthy text.

Daniel: Hey beautiful :) This txt is to tell you all the things I wanted to say right before I left your house. Texting is slightly more romantic than sign language, in my opinion. ;) The way I feel when I'm with you is something I've never felt before...I can't explain it other than to say it's wonderful. I want to feel like this forever. You're an amazing, beautiful girl, Shay. I value our relationship more than I could ever express. Thank you for not minding that I'm different. I love you! Goodnight, my Shay-girl! :) xoxo

By the time she'd reached the end she was crying – no, sobbing. She slowly let the phone drop to the bed. Daniel loved her. Daniel thought she was beautiful. His sweet text couldn't have come at a more perfect time.

Shay lay back across the bed and stared up at the ceiling, searching for some answers.

“God, I know you love Daniel. And I know he loves you. I…well, I've fallen in love with him. That should be good, right? Something to be happy and joyful about. So why does it seem like everyone I thought cared for me is against my relationship with Daniel? They say they love me, yet they don't treat him right. They expect me to live up to their standards. But Daniel… He truly loves me for who I am.”

Uncertain and still upset, Shay was picking up the phone to re-read the message when a knock sounded on her door.

 “Yes?”

“May I come in?” It was Dad.

“Sure.” She sat up and wiped her eyes.

He opened the door, walked over, and sat on the bed next to her, draping his arm around her shoulders. “Are you okay, sweetie?”

 “Not really,” she sniffed.

“Jeff shouldn't have said that.” Dad reached over to the box on the nightstand and handed her a tissue. “I just came to tell you that I approve of Daniel.”

Shay straightened up with a start. “What?”

“Your mother and brother are looking at this from the wrong angle.” He tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. “Daniel is God’s child, same as you and me. He's a good man and I know he'll treat my little girl right. That's all that really matters.”

Shay smiled and gave him a hug. “I'm so glad, Daddy… Because tonight he told me he loves me.”

********

Daniel was walking Shay home one evening after she'd spent the day helping out at the summer camp. As they strolled through town, quickly covering the too short distance to her house, Daniel thanked God for the girl beside him. He pulled her down a back alley, prolonging having to saw goodbye until tomorrow. She grinned and didn't object.

About halfway down the dark alleyway, her voice cut into his silent musings. “Oh, great.”

 “What is it?”

Shay stopped walking and motioned up ahead to where four guys, all around their age, were talking and cutting up there on the street corner. “The tall one is Stewart Marshall. He wanted me to go out with him in high school. I turned him down, and he’s held a grudge ever since.”

“So he won't be pleased to see you with me?”

“Right.” She bit her lip in indecision.

“You're with me,” Daniel assured her.

She smiled and walked with him down the alley. Daniel was hoping to avoid a confrontation if that was possible, but it proved not to be.

They were only a couple yards from the gang of guys when the one Shay had pointed out spoke.

 “Hello, Shay.”

She sighed and stopped walking. “Hello, Stewart.”

Stewart glared at Daniel, inspecting him from head to toe. “Who are you?” Before anyone could speak, he continued his cruel jeer. “Aren't you gonna speak to me?”

Daniel’s fists clenched and he looked over at Shay, wondering how she would answer the guy.

She stepped closer to Daniel and took his arm. “This is Daniel Rogers. Due to an accident as a teenager he can't verbally communicate.”

“How sad,” one of the other young men spoke up. The others hopped at the chance to taunt someone. They all faked somber expressions.

 “Poor guy.”

Stewart ignored his friends and took a step towards her. “So, Shay, how about going out with me Friday night?”

“Sorry, but I have plans.” She nodded towards Daniel.

“Wouldn't you like to go out with a guy who's a real man?” A second man ridiculed.

“Slack off,” Stewart growled across his shoulder. He turned a menacing grin towards Shay. “It's up to her. If Shay here would rather spend the rest of her life with this stupid mute, that's her choice.”

Out of the corner of his eye, Daniel saw Shay cast a dangerous scowl towards the gang before turning to him.

“Come on, Daniel. Let's get away from these idiots.” She reached for his hand, but Daniel jerked away. He shook his head and tore off in the opposite direction. Maybe Stewart and the others were right about him.

Remember a couple weeks ago when I mentioned a music video that I didn't give y'all a link to because it included a certain something for a certain something that would be coming later? (Click here if you don't remember the post to which I'm referring.) Well now you're gonna get to hear all about it. ;) (You're on the edge of your seat in anticipation, right? Nope? That's what I thought...)
Anyhow, here's the video. :) It's a version of Grace Wins by Matthew West, with...sign language!! I thought it was really cool to watch her sign the lyrics. :) If you'd like to check it out for yourself, here's the video. :)

What do ya think? Had you heard the song before? Do you know any sign language? The remaining part of this story will be up tomorrow!! :D

Love Needs No Words ~ part one

Hey folks! How are you on this chilly wintry day? Can you believe that Sunday is Valentines Day?? Me either!! Time is constantly flying past me... It's craziness.
Anyhow. I have a three-part Valentines story for y'all!! The first part today, the next part tomorrow, and the last part on Sunday. :)
*drumroll* And now I give you...

A/N: Dialogue that is both within quotation marks and is in italics, indicates that it is sign language (ASL).

**********

Ever since they'd first met in second grade, Shay knew Daniel was the guy for her. Kind, sweet, and rather cute in her eyes, he was her knight in shining armor. She was a seven year-old with a serious crush.

Shay didn't see him much over the summer and when school started back the following autumn, the boy who had trouble keeping his dark hair out of his striking blue eyes was gone. She learned from a friend of Daniel’s that, due to his father’s occupation, the Rogers family had moved over summer vacation.

Shay was heartbroken. He hadn't even cared enough to say goodbye.

Time passed, as time has a habit of doing, and Shay got over her childhood crush. But she would never forget the young boy who carried her books and let her wear his jacket on a rainy day.

And somewhere else, across the country, another family was faced with life-changing struggles and trials. But the boy, on whom they were focused, would always remember the sunny-blonde girl with an outgoing disposition to match.

**********

Fourteen years later…

The cute, little vintage diner on the outskirts of Willows, California was bustling – as usual. Shay Williams, home from college for summer vacation, worked the register. Greeting each customer with a smile, she spent most of her work hours taking orders and giving back change.

The cash drawer closed with a satisfying cha-ching! as another customer approached the counter.
“Hey,” Shay welcomed the young man with her bright, cheery smile. “What can we get for you today?”

Instead of spouting off his order, as was the norm with most customers, the young man offered her a friendly smile and withdrew a cellphone from his pocket, holding it out to her.

Shay was confused, but looked down at the glowing screen anyways. It read:

My name is Daniel and I am not able to verbally communicate. I would appreciate it very much if you wouldn't mind to take my order in this way.

Shay grinned as she looked up from the bright screen. He only thought there was a communication barrier between them.

“Do you use sign language?” She signed the words as she spoke.

A slow smile covered Daniel’s face. He nodded and signed back to her. “Thank you.”

“No problem. What can I get for you?”

Shay took the young man’s order and he was soon seated at a booth across the diner to wait for his meal. She smiled to herself as she realized that even here one could use the art of sign language. These were the times that she knew studying to teach American Sign Language was the path God had chosen for her.

“Hey, Shay!” The cook calling to her, jolted her from her musings.

 “Yeah?”

“We’re a little behind back here. Could you take out these orders?”

“Sure,” Shay agreed. Grabbing a small service bell from beneath the counter, she placed it next to the cash register and hurried through the free swinging kitchen doors.

Balancing a tray of food on each arm, Shay soon wove her way through the crowded restaurant. She couldn't ignore the little flutter her heart did when she saw that the last plate went to the young mute man. What was his name again?

She took a deep breath and strode towards him.

 “BLT with no tomatoes?”

Obviously engrossed in the book he held, Daniel turned to her with a start. He smiled when he recognized her. “Yes, thank you.”

“You're most welcome.” She placed the basket, holding a sandwich and fries, in front of him. “Is there anything else I can get for you?”

He glanced over his food and shoved the book into a backpack in the seat next to him. “No, I don't think so. Thank you.” He reached up and swiped his hair from his eyes. Shay froze.

“Daniel Rogers?” she exclaimed. The words flew out of her mouth before she could give them a second thought. She really needed to work on that.

He watched her carefully, a confused stare in his familiar blue eyes. He nodded slowly. “Do I know you?”

She slid into the booth across from him and extended her hand. “I'm Shay Williams. We were in Mrs. Collins second grade class together.”

“Of course! I thought you looked familiar.” Daniel grinned. “If I remember correctly, you had quite a crush on me.”

Shay blushed and offered a lame shrug. “What can I say? I was seven.”

Daniel appeared to be on the verge of a laugh.

“And now you're trying not to laugh at me.”

Daniel grinned and held up his hands in surrender. “Guilty as charged.”

Shay laughed, grateful for the lightness of their conversation. “So, has your family moved back to town?”

Daniel shook his head. “Nope, just me. I'm teaching at a summer school for mute and deaf children out at the old campground for the next few months. After that,” he shrugged, “who knows.”

“That's wonderful! I'm actually studying to be a teacher of ASL.”

“Really? I was wondering where you learned such fluent sign language. You haven't missed a thing I've said.”

Shay beamed at the compliment. “I've always admired the language of the hands.”

“What inspired you to learn and teach sign language?”

“Well, my uncle is deaf and I–” Their conversation was interrupted by a shout from the kitchen.

“Shay, come on! You've got a line of impatient customers waiting!”

Shay groaned. “Coming!” She turned back to Daniel. “Hank comes off gruff sometimes, but I know better. His bark is worse than his bite.”

The look of concern that had crossed Daniel’s face at the cook’s rough tone, swapped back to a smile. “I'll let you get back to work. I've enjoyed talking with you.”

“I've enjoyed it too.” Shay slid out of the bench and stood. She bit her lip hesitantly, considering what she wanted to offer. She cleared her throat and pushed ahead. “There's a young people’s gathering at church tomorrow night. Dinner, Bible study, a concert. You should come.”

Daniel grinned. “Will you be there?”

Shay nodded, wondering why he'd asked such a question. “Sure.”

“Then I just might have to come.”

The blush returned, deeper this time, as she realized what he meant. “Great! Well, I really need to get back to work. Hope to see you there, Daniel!”

*********

Shay clicked her short nails repeatedly along the edge of the tabletop. It was the next night at the young people’s gathering and she was anxiously watching for Daniel. Leigh, her best friend since childhood, remained at her side. After hearing of Shay’s encounter, Leigh was rather interested in seeing the young man who'd always been able to catch Shay’s eye.

“Oh, he's coming in the door right now,” Shay exclaimed in a whisper, her excitement evident.

Her friend squinted in that direction. “There's several guys at the door. Which one?”

“Dark hair. Green shirt.” Shay muttered the brief description behind her hand as she dragged her own gaze across the room. She didn't want to seem too obvious.

 “That's Daniel Rogers?!”

“Leigh!” Shay hissed, elbowing her friend.

“Sorry,” she shrugged. “But I think you should wave to him,” Leigh motioned in Daniel’s direction. “He looks kind of lost.”

Shay frowned and stood up. “Daniel! Over here!”

He looked her way and Shay waved him over to their table, returning his bright smile.

“Good evening, ladies.” Daniel signed as he approached their table.

“Hey!” Shay greeted. “Have a seat. I was starting to think you weren't coming.”

“Yes, she's always this bubbly, talkative, and straightforward.” Leigh spoke up from her seat on the other side of Shay.

Daniel chuckled and pulled out a chair.

Shay shot Leigh a warning glance and quickly offered introductions. “Leigh, this is Daniel Rogers. Daniel, this is my friend, Leigh O’Connor.”

Leigh smiled and held out her hand. “Hi, Daniel. I heard a lot about–” she winced at the sharp jab from Shay's foot, “...you.”

He shook her hand, not noticing, or wise enough not to comment on, the exchange between the two young women. “Nice to meet you.”

Shay interpreted his response to Leigh before turning to Daniel. “So, I realized last night that I didn't even give you directions for how to get here. I'm so sorry. I can't believe I did that!”

He grinned. “I didn't need directions. Willows isn't that big.”

“I know,” Shay sighed. “But still… How awful of me!”

“Actually,” Daniel paused, as if about to make a confession. “I knew right where to find you. Your family has always came to this church.”

“So we have.” Shay grinned, pleased that he remembered.

With fun and good company, the evening flew by. Shay found that she enjoyed Daniel's laid-back personality and his open approach to life.

After the concert, they said goodbye outside of the church and then Shay returned inside to talk with Leigh.

Leigh gave a sidelong glance as Shay walked up. “Did you see your boyfriend off?”

“Boyfriend?!” Shay repeated. “That's a bit presumptuous, don't you think?”

 “Is it?” Leigh grinned, knowingly.

Shay rolled her eyes and walked on out the door ahead of her friend. She didn't wish to confirm Leigh's anticipations, but she had a feeling she would be spending a great deal of time with Daniel Rogers over the coming summer.

*********

The first month of Shay's summer vacation seemed to fly by. She worked most days in the diner, where Daniel now ate most of his meals, and she spent her days off helping out at the summer school where Daniel was teaching.

Shay enjoyed spending time with Daniel and she had a blast being able to communicate with all the sweet children.

One evening, about five weeks after the day he'd first showed back up in town, Shay was leaving work when movement on the patio near the entrance caught her eye.

She grabbed her purse and hurried out the door. Daniel was standing there next to the door, waiting for her. “Walk you to your car, ma'am?”

Shay smiled sweetly. “I'd like that.”

*******

As they sauntered along down the sidewalk, Shay easily kept the conversation up. Her never ending source of chitchat amazed Daniel. As did everything else about this sweet girl.

 “Did you hear me?”

Daniel was jerked from his thoughts when he realized Shay was speaking to him. He cleared his throat and glanced away when he further knew he'd been caught staring at her. “I'm sorry. What did you say?”

She laughed, not the least bit bothered. “I said I've enjoyed spending time at the summer school.”

He nodded. “Yeah, I have too. Spending time with the kids and…with you.”

“It's been really great for me,” she went on. “I've learned so much about ASL that I can't learn from a textbook.”

Daniel felt like someone had socked him in the stomach. Was that all she saw him as? An easy way to practice sign language? He had to know before their budding relationship progressed anymore.

By the time they reached her car, he'd worked up enough nerve to ask her out. He scratched his chin awkwardly. “I'd like to ask you to go out to eat with me.”

Her green eyes twinkled. “That would be fun. When were you thinking?”

“How about tomorrow night?” Daniel suggested, stepping ahead of her to open her door.

“Tomorrow would be great,” Shay smiled up at him before tossing her purse into the passengers seat.

“I'll pick you up around six.”

 “I'll be ready.”
*********

The following evening found Daniel and Shay seated on the open porch of a locally owned seafood restaurant. The conversation remained lighthearted before and during their meal. Daniel hesitated to bring up the subject he'd rather not discuss. After the waitress had taken away their dessert dishes, he decided to bring it up.

“There's something I need to know.”

“Sure.” Her brow furrowed. “Is something wrong?”

He shook his head. “You've never once asked me what happened with my voice. Why is that?”

“I guess I just assumed that when you were ready to share that with me you would.”

Daniel nodded. “I appreciate that you haven't asked me about it, but I think you ought to know.”

“Alright.” Shay shifted in her chair and propped her elbows on the table, giving him her full attention. “If that's what you want.”

Daniel rubbed his thumb back and forth across a scratch on the table. “I want to tell you, but it's not easy to talk about.”

 She nodded. “I understand.”

His thumb stilled. He wanted to lash out in frustration – she didn't understand and she never could – but he knew that she was only trying to be a friend.

As if reading his thoughts, Shay continued. “Well, I guess I don't understand, but I'd like to be a listening ear…if you want.”

The last three words came out almost as a question, causing Daniel to feel obliged to answer. A nod would suffice. Concentrating on the table, he took a deep breath and began.

“My family was involved in a car wreck when I was sixteen. It was bad, and we all got hurt in one way or another. Besides the damage to my vocal chords, I was pretty banged up too. They didn't know if I would make it. I was unconscious and sedated for days.” He paused and bit his lip. “Then when I woke up, I couldn't speak.”

When Daniel looked up, he was deeply touched to see tears shimmering in Shay’s eyes. She truly cared.

“That must have been awful. To wake up from something so…horrific and…not even be able to ask what happened or–” She broke off and swiped at a runaway tear.

 Daniel nodded. “Yeah. It was…”

Shay reached across the table and touched his arm. “It's okay. You don't have to tell me anymore if you don't want to.”

 “I need to finish.”

Shay nodded and patiently waited for him to go on.

He clenched his jaw, determined not to cry in front of her. “Waking up like that was…terrifying. It was like a bad dream, a nightmare, and I couldn't escape it. I was too weak to write anything, and then once I could, I had to use my left hand. My right arm was broken in the accident. It was several days before I could even converse with my parents, much less…” He broke down. His hands stopped moving, forming words, and his forehead dropped to his palms. It was too much; digging up old heartaches was too painful.

When Daniel felt Shay’s hand leave his arm, he was hurt but not surprised. What would a beautiful, talented girl like Shay want with him anyway?

Moments later he was startled to feel her hands on his shoulders. “You're not alone in this, Daniel. And you never will be.”

Was there every a time I didn't know about Little House??? I grew up on Little House! My mom had bought the series (the Laura ones. You know, with the gingham covers?) sometime or other, and we had family reading time every night. We read through the entire series at least twice. : ) I remember Dad reading aloud, and him skipping some of the lengthy dress descriptions. Apparently that wasn't very interesting to the guys... ;)

2. Which Little House series have you read? Which are you favorite? (Laura, Martha, Rose, etc.)
I've only read the Laura books and one of the Caroline books (On Top of Concord Hill). So I guess Laura is my favorite. :) I also have The Road from Roxbury and Across the Puddingstone Dam from the Charlotte Years. I hope to read them, and all the others for that matter, sometime soon. :)

3. Have you read any "extra" Little House books? (non "canon", cookbooks, song books, craft books, little kid books, etc.)
Yes, I have! I got the My Little House Books set for Christmas when I was maybe nine or ten. I think I read them all that day. :) The pictures are soo pretty!! <3

Then in fifth grade I did The Prairie Primer by Margie Gray! Required for that was The Little House Cookbook, The Little House Crafts Book, and The Little house Guidebook. I had so much fun with all the little house activities and assignments that year!! (I also have the little house paper dolls, but they're currently not in a place I can access them for pictures. :-( )

4. Have you read any biographies/autobiographies about Laura or any of the Little House girls?
Laura's Album by William Anderson. It's a remembrance scrapbook of Laura's life, with lots of 'real' pictures and stuff. :)

5. If you could be in any character's place, who would you choose and why?
Laura. :) Because she's so fun and tomboyish, but she grows up to be a responsible young wife and mother. (And she's a writer so that makes her doubly awesome. xD)

6. What's your favorite Little House ship? (AKA couple)
Laura and Almanzo!!! <3  Because any couple who gives each other nicknames is pretty darn adorable in my way of thinkin'. ;)

According to Pinterest this is a behind-the-scenes picture, but I like it. ; )

7. What's your favorite Little House book? Cover?
Oh, dear, I don't know if I can answer that! I love them all!! *hugs the books* My favorite book would have to be a tie between The Long Winter and Little Town on the Prairie. Oh, and Little House on the Prairie. (It's a three way tie.) My favorite cover (of the original Laura books and covers) is These Happy Golden Years. :)

8. If you could invite any secondary character from any of the Little House books over for dinner, who would you choose and why?
Just one??? How about a few. ;)
Ida Brown – because she's so sweet and Laura's friend. :)
Cap Garland – because he went with Almanzo to get the seed wheat and that's make him a jim-dandy fellow in my book. ;)
Mr. Edwards – because he's so funny. Maybe he'd be willing to teach me how to spit... B-)

9. Have you watched the Little House TV show? If so, do you enjoy it?
YES!!!! Grew up on that too. ;) And now we have all nine seasons. *happy dance* Enjoy isn't the word for it... I LOVE THAT SHOW!! :D I know it's not like the books, but it's such a great, family show I'm willing to overlook that. ;) *nods*

10. If you could watch a YouTube miniseries on any Little House book or series, which would you choose and how would the basic plot go?
Hmm, that's an interesting idea. ;) Maybe The First Four Years. I'd like to see more of what Laura and Almanzo's first years of marriages early were like, instead of the TV rendition. (I mean that's awesome, but not very much like the book. xD)

So there ya have it, folks! Be sure to check out Ashley's blog and here's the link to the introduction post and giveaway!!! :)

11. I love using pretty words, like – delightful, lovely, bliss, aurora, beyond, deliciously, aroma, meadow, faience, frolicking, serendipitous, unique... I'll stop there. ;)

The Questions :)

1. What is your favorite movie?
JUST ONE??? Really, Jesseca? *sigh* I'd have to say Beautiful Dreamer is right at the top. (But I could give y'all a really long list. B-) )

Just LOOK. Aren't those two absolutely ADORABLE?!?!?! xD

2. Favorite genre of books?
Most anything, as long as I enjoy it. :) Usually historical fiction. I don't mind romance, as long as it's not mushy. ;)

3. Books that are releasing in 2016 you are looking forward to reading?
The Silent Blade by Jesseca Wheaton
Anchor in the Storm by Sarah Sundin (though I probably should read Through Waters Deep first...hehe.)
Defy by Tricia Mingerink (after I read Deny ^_^)

4. If you could travel anywhere in the U.S., where would you go?
Oh, that's an impossible question... I've always wanted to visit Hawaii, so I guess that's where I'd go. :)

5. Do you play any instruments?
Nope. But I played violin when I was like five to eight/nine. :)

6. What is your favorite classical song?
Classical? I never listen to classical music. (Like ever.) Hm... When I played violin, my teacher's husband taught piano and the recitals for all their students were always together. I remember some of the piano students playing Menuet 116 by Bach. I thought it was soo pretty! (That's cuz it is. ;) *nods*)

7. Surprise! You've been given a ticket to meet your favorite author! Who is it?
Oh dear, that's a tough one. I've already met one favorite author. B-) Maybe Susan Marlow? Or Sarah Sundin? Or Wanda Brunstetter? How about the person who's giving me the ticket, gives me tickets to see all my favorite authors? *nods* *fills out other questions and then comes back to this one* I've got it. I'd like to meet the Author of the Bible. And Someone has already paid the price and given me a secure ticket... ;)

 Do you see it? :D

8. Favorite outdoor activity?
Camping, kayaking, reading in my ENO (that's a cool, colorful, lightweight hammock for those of y'all who didn't know.), and wading in the creek. : )

9. Would you rather do laundry or clean the kitchen? (I know, I'm making you work. ;P)
How much laundry? What state is the kitchen in? xD I know...I'm answering a question with a question. I don't mind laundry, but I don't like folding the laundry. (That's seriously the worst part.) So maybe the kitchen. I don't know... *shrugs*

10. What is your favorite book in the Bible and why is it your favorite?
Grrr...this is a hard question!! I'll say Ruth. :) Because I love the story of her loyalty to Naomi, and Boaz and Ruth's love story. :)

11. Who is your favorite historical character and why?
I have lots! Maybe Jim Elliot...or Nate Saint. *thinks of a big, long list of dear ol' folks* Yeah, Jim and Elizabeth Elliot. :-)
