Jonas & Olivia // Book Review and Blog Tour

Hey friends! Time for a lovely peek into the past with a review of Miss Victoria Minks new novel! :D

Summery:
Fourteen year old Olivia Wilkerson is left desolate and grieving when her patriot father passes away. Directed by her father's will to be placed in the care of an old friend, Olivia is forced to venture away from all she’s ever known to make her new life among people who are strangers to her.

Unaware of the new responsibility about to be thrust on him, Jonas Carmichael lives the life of a reclusive in an attempt to ignore the painful memories of the past. His heart has grown hard and bitter over the past thirty years of solitude, and his hatred towards people has only multiplied.

Suddenly burdened with Olivia, Jonas’s only burning desire is to shove the girl off on somebody else. But Olivia, still suffering from her loss, is only looking for someone to love her as her father did-- and soon realizes that there is more to Jonas than meets the eye.

With the Revolutionary War pressing closer around Jonas’s secluded bubble of safety and threatening to burst it at any moment, Jonas discovers that there are choices to be made--choices that will not only affect himself but those around him as well.

My Review:

Five of five stars

Jonas & Olivia is a charming tale full of life changes, sweet moments, and all-around whimsical beauty. With a touch of mystery and intrigue, it certainly kept me flipping the pages. Set during the American Revolution, this is a must-read for lovers of historical fiction with sweet storylines.

The central theme to the story is this message that our Lord is the best Father we can ever have. Though our beloved earthly father's will try their best, give their all, they can't really add up by comparison to God. He will always be there -- to love us, uphold us, and just be our Father.

Miss Minks did a fabulous job of weaving a heart-warming tale accurately displaying the flawed, brokenness of us humans. I loved all the characters so much. They were portrayed in a way that I found to be very real, relatable, and lovable.

Olivia was an absolute sweetheart. She's like a drop of sunshine in a world of darkness, spreading light and good cheer whenever she goes. She reminded me of Pollyanna from the childhood classic. :) Though she was said to be fourteen years old, she seemed a little younger to me.

Jonas is quite the intriguing character. But, as the story develops, we see just how heart-broken he really is. (Okay, so, quite honestly I wanted to ring his neck through a majority of the book. That's good though, right?)

And then...there's Ishmael. Where do I even begin, people? He is so quiet and sweet. (Like, can we just adopt him as my older brother? Please?) *spoilers ahead* When Olivia taught him how to read and later led him to Jesus, I CRIED PEOPLE. Such sweet moments. <3 *end of spoilers*

There were so many times I laughed during this book. With the Bradshaws, over the nightcap, at Nabby Culpepper. Such good, wholesome humor. :)

The only thing I can think of that I disagreed with (aside from the fact that Olivia seemed immature for a teenager in the 18th century) was that impersonal references to God and Jesus were not capitalized. Proper nouns were, but common nouns were not. There wasn't any irreverence hinted at, but coming from a house where 'He', 'You', etc. are always capitalized in reference to God, I disagreed with it.

Quotes.

"You should write some horrid novel. Your outlook on life would do some tragic heroine justice I'm sure."

"I have a sign—No one allowed, or risk shots in your anatomy!"

"Strange, isn't it, all those lines we have on our hands?"

"I know your God is real."

"Hope and Freedom of the soul first come from being a child of God."

But in that family there wouldn’t be an Ishmael—and there wouldn’t be Jonas.

"A broken heart still beats, Jonas, and it can mend. ... And God loves to heal the broken things."

**I received an e-copy of this book from the author in exchange for my honest review.**

Beautiful People ~ July Edition

Hey, people of the blogosphere! :D (Just don't ask. I'm in an extremely weird supercalifragilisticexpialidocious mood.) But... Guess what?!?

I.

Have.

Neeeeewwwwssss.

My lovely novel, War Tears...this precious book I have been pouring my heart and soul and many long hours into for one year, four months, and seven days (not that I'm counting) is...now...50,000 words.

WHAT EVEN IS LIFE PEOPLE I CANT EVEN HELP ME.

*flails*

I stayed up to midnight last night and wrote over two thousand words yesterday to make this happen, but IT. WAS. WORTH. IT.

I also slept in this morning in commemoration of this ground-breaking event. And since I'm still in a celebratory mood, we're doing a fun post. July's edition of Beautiful People hosted by none other than Mrs. Bethany Carnathan. :)

*scratching noises*

*sounds of a chair sliding out and back*

*whispered voices*

*typing-clicking resumes*

Hey, everyone! How are you all today?? I'm quite well, thank you. My name is Bethany Carnathan, David, who you got to meet last month, is my husband.

When Faith announced she wanted me to answer some questions, I requested that she just let me write the whole article.

Faith: Article? It's a blog post.

Same difference. Anyway, she willingly agreed. (She would rather be somewhere writing our story into this little...*studies electronic device*...gadget.)

So here we go. I've been button-punching for fifteen minutes just to get this far, but at least it's fun. *wink*

Do they want to get married and/or have children? Why or why not?
Hehehe... Well, I am married, so I guess that speaks for itself. *wink* And, yes, we do want children. Lots.

What is their weapon of choice? (It doesn’t necessarily have to be a physical weapon.)
My blue eyes... David says he can't say no to them. *snickers*

What's the nicest thing they've done for someone else, and why did they do it?
Nicest thing? Um... I don't like talking about myself, sooo... Maybe standing up for a boy that was being bullied in school. I don't like these questions...

Have they ever been physically violent with someone, and what instigated it?
Well, I slapped a man once. But he deserved it.

Are they a rule-follower or a rebel?
I guess I'm a rule-follower. I was always the child that did her schoolwork and chores without complaint. *smiles*

Are they organized or messy?
Organized. David is organized in some things, but he's usually pretty messy... Drives me crazy. *grins*

What makes them feel loved, and who was the last person to make them feel that way?
Knowing that Jesus Christ willingly came to earth to suffer, bleed, and die for my sins even when I turned away from Him so many times makes me feel loved above all else. And then, David. *smiles*

What do they eat for breakfast?
Coffee? Breakfast isn't my favorite meal.

Have they ever lost someone close to them? What happened?
Yes, I lost both my parents before I was eighteen. My momma died of sickness when I was seven, and daddy died soon following a farming accident when I was sixteen.

What’s their treat of choice? (Or, if not food, how else do they reward themselves?)
Treat? Reward myself? This sounds like 21st century talk...

Faith: *tries to explain*

Um, okay. Back to treat of choice, that would be good ol' black licorice. I've always loved that stuff. David thinks it's disgusting and says it will turn my teeth black, but... *grins*

I hope you all enjoyed this look into my life!! I know I enjoyed writing up this post for y'all. Even though it did me much longer to type it up on Faith's little flat, blue/grey box than it would have in a typewriter...

Later, readers! *smiles*

^*^*^*^*^

Alrighty, Faith here. I hope you enjoy this post, everyone! :D Isn't Bethany an absolute sweetheart?!

A couple quick FYI/reminder/requests before I go...

-- I forgot to tell the answer to the trivial question I gave ($:8/?!! A little late, but the answer is the 1940s. It was originally created as a chocolate substitute with the shortages caused by the war. :)

-- I will be without internet tonight through Thursday. We'll be home over the weekend, and then gone next week again. Camping time, people! :D

-- Lastly, would everyone please remember a family that's friends of our family in your prayers? Their daughter who is my age ran off. She contacted her mom just to say she's safe, but won't come home. Prayers would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for reading! Until the weekend! :)

The Silent Blade // Author Interview & Book Review

Hey everyone!! *waves excitedly* I'm so thrilled to be part of Jesseca's blog tour for her fabulous book, The Silent Blade, today!! :D Let's get on with this!

~ Synopsis

Dromiskin, Ireland. 925 A.D.

Eira has no greater desire than to see her life returned to what it once was—before her older brother Kevin's sudden disappearance four years earlier. But the simple life she hoped for seems unattainable; on the contrary, her life is about to get all the more complicated.
When she suddenly finds herself and Willem, her twin brother, taken captive by someone who claims to be Kevin’s enemy, things go from bad to worse. It soon becomes clear that she and Willem are to become bait in a trap set for Kevin, and Eira knows she must try to warn him. But how, when she herself is a captive?
As mysteries of the past are unveiled, and loyalties are revealed, Eira realizes how precious her friends truly are. And when mortal danger threatens those nearest to her, will she be able to trust God with the lives of her friends and family?

Isn't that cover absolutely drool-worthy?? *hugs it*

~ My Review

I feel like I should start out this book review by saying that, up until last summer, I had a dislike for stories with medieval settings. Quite honestly, I hadn't tried many books set in that time period, because the storylines usually didn't appeal to me. I had unfairly categorized all fiction with a medieval setting as the 'princess in distress rescued by handsome knight' type of thing. Which was wrong in itself, but I'm getting sidetracked here.

So when I found out that Jesseca had a medieval book in the works...I was intrigued. I knew I must learn more about this story! Could it be the one medieval book that I would like?

Well, friends.

It was.

And since reading an unedited, still-in-the-works version of The Silent Blade about a year ago, I can happily say I have found other books set in a medieval period to enjoy. ^_^ Hooray!

Okay, on to what I love about this delightful novel. :)

The theme of the story is forgiveness. Sacrifice. Love. Protection of family (if that's considered a theme?). Jealousy, and what can come from it when it's not quickly resolved. All of which are orchestrated so beautifully, all tied together in a glorious symphony of words that we call a book.

The characters are precious and real. The family ties are strong, believable, and challenge me to love my own family more. The romance is sweet and heart-warming. I just adore this story. :)

I must take a moment to talk about Kevin. Kevin is my absolute favorite character. He's like the bestest big brother ever. He has his flaws, his struggles – sure. That makes him human. But his protectiveness over his family, his siblings especially Eira, is so precious! I just love Kevin. He can be my adoptive older brother. <3

Also, *spoilers ahead* the side-story of Henry. Like, what even?!?! I was so stunned. I did not see that coming. Loved it. <3 Such a beautiful showing of how God is working through any and all circumstances. :) *end of spoilers*

And...the names. I just love them! Eira, Casimir, Aeden, Cian, Diarmuid, Peadar, Stace (I love Stace. We're great chums. I know all his secrets.)... If I tried, I couldn't pronounce half of them but they are so pretty and medieval! ^_^

It's not a perfect book, but it's a good book and I love it. For the young author's first officially published work, I found it to be remarkable. :) Five star rating for me.

**I received an e-ARC from the author in exchange for my honest review.**

Favorite Quotes.

"You are rather pretty, you know. Especially when your face is flushed and your hair has come loose. Like it is now."

"Remind me, just why am I carrying this?"
"Because, my dear friend, I carried it down here."

"There are more men in the world than you, Merek. As startling as that fact may be."

"We are His to begin with. Our life is in His hands and He will decide what's best."

"Do you ever do anything except ask questions?"

"Jealousy is like a sword, a silent blade that comes into our life and wrenches from us any good that may have been there before."

~ Author Interview

Hello, Jesseca! So good to have you here today! :) From the first spark of inspiration until today, how long did the process of writing, editing, and publishing The Silent Blade take?
Oh, dear. Umm...I think I got the idea in April of 2015, so that would make it about a year and three months!

Oh wow! That seems pretty fast to me. ;) And what was your favorite part of that process? Least favorite?
My favorite part was when I sent it out and let others read it. It was sorta intimidating at first because... I mean, I'm letting someone else read my work! But I really appreciated all the feedback I got back, and I know it definitely helped shape the book into what it is now. :) Of course, publishing and getting it all finished is quite awesome, too. ;)

Where did you get the inspiration to write a story in a medieval setting?
The inspiration for The Silent Blade came mainly from two places; Nicole Sager's The Arcrean Conquest series, and the movie Prince Caspian.  Both are fantasy with a medieval feel (Nicole Sager's is non-magical) and after reading the books and watching the movie I really wanted to sorta similar. But.. I prefer historical fiction to fantasy, so... the medieval time period got my attention!

Ooo, sounds wonderful. :) Out of anything you've ever written, what's your favorite story?
I'd have to say A Question of Honor. That book has had more research and hours poured into it then I ever dreamed of when I started it. It's currently in the 2nd draft/re-writing stage. It's my "special" novel, and I've learned a lot through writing it, both in a historical context and through my writing it, it's brought me closer to the Lord. It's almost as if the book has become a part of me. Sometimes I;m not sure how good that is... ;)

Hehe, I can relate. ;) And lastly, what advice would you give to wanna-be authors?
Keep reading and writing! But also, share your work! Let someone you trust read through it and critique it, and then when you feel it's ready, find some people you don't directly know to read through it.  Not only will it improve your writing, you'll be able to get go know other fellow readers/writers. And of course, since they don't know you too well and aren't personally connected with you, they'll be more honest in their feedback.

Thanks for visiting, Jesseca! :D

Camp NaNo July ~ Week #3

Well, peeps. Another week has gone by. This was the week writers block officially hit. This was when I fell behind in my writing goal. *sniffs* But never fear! I caught back up. :)

My Camp NaNo word count now stands at 21,076 – only 5,802 of which were this week. O.o The good news? The total word count of War Tears is now over 46,000. *bounces around* THAT'S NOVEL LENGTH, PEOPLES. (As someone so kindly pointed out to me. ;)) Also, I only have 8,000-and-something more words to write this month... XD *faints*

Day Fifteen // Friday // 2

Yes, you read that correctly. No, it was not a typo. Yes, I only wrote TWO words this day. No, I'm not happy about it.

*cough*

What can I say? I had no inspiration... =/ I worked that morning,...

And decorated the for-sale rack for the wildflower event ^_^

...went to town, and went to an event that night. I'm really not sure what else I did other than eat ice cream and finished reading this delightful book

Review coming tomorrow!

Day Sixteen // Saturday // 682

Saturday... What did I do again? Oh yes. That was the day I slept in, went swimming until it thundered, wrote some, and went to bed at a decent time. (Hooray for sleep!)

Oh, and went for a walk after the rain. :)

Day Seventeen // Sunday // 453

Sunday... Such. Chaos. Church, lunch, visiting, more church, more food, long ride home, and writing a pitiful amount of words. Pretty much. Also, I spent more time on Pinterest between church. :P You know, all that free time I had when I should have been writing...

Sunday ended on a sad note. You know, with me over here wailing. I WAS DOING SOOO GOOD BUT NOW I'M BEHIIIIIINNNNNDDDDD!!! *sobs*

Day Eighteen // Monday // 1,273

Monday...felt like Saturday for some really weird, unknown reason. Part of it could have been because Dad was around all day catching up on mowing, etc. and that's usually a Saturday thing. I don't even know.

So, I was glancing over something I had already written, editing it a little and tweaking here and there. And I came across something that me stop and go "WUT?" I thought I had 'David you're scarring me'. And I was like, "scarring? That doesn't even make sense!" But...it didn't say scarring. Scaring, Faith, scaring. One R. Put your glasses on or go to bed. XP

I drank iced coffee...oh-la-la, is this stuff good.

It also rained Monday. You can't tell much by this picture, but it's literally pouring. You know, raining cats and dogs. Puppies and kittens. Hammers and nails. *shrug* Whatever suits your fancy and floats your goat.

*rereads what she just typed*

That was weird.

And Monday ended happily with a B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L sunset and me getting almost caught up on my word count. :)

Day Nineteen // Tuesday // 1,257

I worked Tuesday morning. (Hah. Haha. That sounded pathetic. XD) I really don't know what else I did though...I wrote words...?

Remember the jar I showed y'all? Well, here it is in its glorious green completion. <3

Day Twenty // Wednesday // 1,061

Wednesday... I worked again. And came home. And took a shower. And left to do a thing or two in town before church time. I really don't know what else I did...

Isn't it darling?? :D

Day Twenty-One // Thursday // 1,074

Thursday was a bit crazy. I wrote more than I had been getting in less time, blogged, and sifted through some emails. Someone suggested to me that a change a major part of War Tears (like NOOOO. That. Cannot. Happen. What were you thinking?!) and spent awhile trying to avoid being strangled. Obviously it worked as I am here now. *waves*

This was also the night (err, morning. It was technically Friday.) I discovered what three cups of coffee do to me. Coffee usually doesn't affect me, but apparently I just wasn't drinking enough. I couldn't go to sleep last night! That's extremely uncommon for me -- especially considering my lack of sleep recently. So now I'm running on about 6 hours of sleep...maybe I need more coffee. -_-

Alrighty. So last week Someone asked if/when a excerpt from War Tears would be shown here on the blog. And I thought...why not? So Blessing and everyone else, here ya go. Go ahead and read it, critique it (I'm serious. I want honest feedback.) and tell me how. horrible it is.

^*^*^*^*^

Sunday, December 7th, 1941

“Sweetheart,” David stuck his head into the kitchen, “Luke and I are going out to the hangar. Call us if we’re not back by the time you're ready for us.”
“Alright,” Bethany smiled. “We should be ready in about an hour.”
The back door clicked shut and Bethany turned to her sister-in-law. “The hangar?”
Erin snickered as she rolled out dough for a buttermilk pie. “I guess it's officially considered a hangar now that the plane actually runs.”
Erin and Bethany cooked and chatted, enjoying the sisterly companionship, while Lenore entertained herself at the dining room table. Every few minutes she bounded into the room to show her auntie Beth a picture she had drew.
Bethany was getting dishes from the cupboard when a movement in the field caught her eye. “Surely they're not up in that plane again,” she mumbled, quickly reaching up to draw aside the curtains.
She sighed with relief when she spotted the plane sitting idly in the ‘hangar’, only the stilled propeller visible. The motion that had caught her eye turned out to be a truck. Bethany didn't recognize the man that hopped from the truck and ducked into the building, his shoulders hunched forward against the fierce winds.
Bethany returned to fixing the midday meal, but a few minutes later she caught a glimpse of the truck as it left the field and rumbled on down West street. Hmm, that's strange.
It wasn't long before double footsteps could be heard clomping across the porch. The stranger with the rattling truck gone from her mind, Bethany smiled at the sound. “They're back, Erin!” she called over her shoulder as she wiped her hands on her apron and stepped into the next room.
The front door swung open and David and Luke entered. Instead of removing their coats and hats, or coming to the kitchen with the womenfolk, they both went straight to the radio.
David leaned his shoulder against the wall, his head down and face hidden. Luke knelt in front of the radio and began fumbling with the dial. Bethany took a step into the room. Something was wrong. They were both acting so strange, distraught even.
A station came in, and Luke sat back on his heels.
The crackling voice came over the air. “Japanese naval and air forces have attacked Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. As of eight o’clock this morning, Pacific Time, Pearl Harbor Hawaii faultered under Japanese attacks from sea and air. Reports coming in tell of mass destruction. The following is part of a phone call the New York station received.” A switching sound was heard and the aforementioned phone call began to replay. ** “We have witnessed this morning the distant view a brief full battle of Pearl Harbor and the severe bombing of Pearl Harbor by enemy planes, undoubtedly Japanese. The city of Honolulu has also been attacked and considerable damage done. This battle has been going on for nearly three hours. One of the bombs dropped within fifty feet of KTU tower. It is no joke. It is a real war. The public of Honolulu has been advised to keep in their homes and away from the Army and Navy. There has been serious fighting going on in the air and in the sea. The heavy shooting seems to be . . . a little interruption. We cannot estimate just how much damage has been done, but it has been a very severe attack. The Navy and Army appear now to have the air and the sea under control.” **
Bethany gasped and took a staggering step backwards, reaching out to the wall for support. The words reverberated through her mind. Attacked…destruction…bombing…war…
Davids gaze jerked up to hers. He stumbled across the room towards her and she welcomed his arms to lean on.
“What does that mean?” Her voice came out squeaky and muffled as she clung to David's cold coat.
“We've been bombed,” he whispered. His voice sounded flat and emotionless. Bethany pulled back and sought out his face. His voice may have carried no evidence of feeling to her ears, but his face showed it all. His squared jaw was clenched and his eyes showed the depth of his anguish. Anger and despair were also visible in his defined features.
“Attacked. By Japan. God, help us.”
Without another word, David led her towards the couch and pulled her down next to him. Bethany glanced up and noted Erin and Luke across the room. Erin sat in the rocker, Lenore on her lap. Luke remained knelt in the floor by the radio, but he had turned to his family. Holding them in his arms.
David’s arms came back around her and Bethany nestled closer against him. She understood what he was feeling. With the onset of such news, she too needed to be reassured that he was indeed safe and there with her.
“How did you know?” she whispered, her voice breaking.
“Mr. Cummings from the lumber yard stopped by. He was going to the house of anyone he knew to spread the news.”
Which explained why Bethany didn’t recognize the truck or the man. Mr. Cummings wasn't known for going to church, and he frequented parts of Cana that Bethany stayed away from.
David tucked her face into his shoulder, his cheek against hers, and reached for her other hand which rested on his arm. “Let’s pray for our country.”

^*^*^*^*^

** indicates an excerpt of the actual call received by the New York station on the morning of the Pearl Harbor bombings.

Alrighty. I'm out the door to work. Hope you all had a good week and happy weekend! :) Any plans? I'm hoping to get ahead on my word count AND finish a book...we'll see. ;)

The journey is now continuing but this time in New York, with Marie's brother Edward. Read the first Orphan Journeys Short Story to find out what happened to a character from one of the Orphan Journeys Novellas.

A short story sequel to the novella, Journey to Love. Can be read as a stand-alone.
